Organic, Natural, Vegan…What Does it All Mean in Your Cosmetics?

As the skincare and cosmetics industries grow and evolve, it can get confusing for consumers to understand all the different labels out there. From organic to vegan to natural to cruelty-free, there are a lot of options showing up on the market these days.

Vegan products alone make up about 7% of newly-launched personal care items around the world. Organic and natural skincare lines account for over $13 billion in sales globally. These products are here to stay.

Why the Shift to Natural and Organic?

Modern consumers have enormous amounts of research and information at their fingertips. The push for high-quality, natural ingredients is strong in all markets, from food to water bottles to mattresses.

With rising rates of illnesses such as cancer and autoimmune disorders, consumers are becoming more and more careful about the products they choose to support with their dollars. And as the area of animal rights continues to grow, so too does the demand for cruelty-free merchandise. Shoppers seek out items with natural, organic, and vegan ingredients to align with their wellness goals and their ethical beliefs.

So What Does it All Mean?

The cosmetics industry has a lot of gray areas in its regulation and certification. It is wise to gather as much information as possible about the labeling and ingredients in the products you use. Here is a quick overview of some of the labeling options you will see on the market:

  • Natural: The term natural can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Generally, it refers to ingredients that are not synthetic. It is important to keep in mind that natural does not automatically mean “safe.” No governing agency regulates the use of the term natural, so be sure to read labels to verify what is in a given product.
  • Organic: Products labeled as organic have more oversight in their labeling. The USDA can certify that specific ingredients are organic, but that does not mean the entire product meets those same standards. To be certified organic, ingredients must be free of chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, and hormones. There is a range in the labeling, depending on the amount of certified organic ingredients in a product. If an item has less than 70% organic ingredients, it cannot include the word “organic” on its primary panel.
  • Vegan and Cruelty-free: Vegan ingredients and merchandise do not include any animal products or byproducts. These ingredients include beeswax, gelatin, and mink oil. Many people who do not follow a vegan diet still choose to purchase 100% vegan skincare products for their gentleness and effectiveness. Products labeled as cruelty-free have not been tested on animals and do not include any ingredients that were tested on animals. So it is possible for products to be vegan, but not cruelty-free and vice versa.
